Scenario 1: Apply PGWP + SOWP Together (Best Option)

This is the recommended and safest option.

• Apply for PGWP and spouse open work permit extension together

• Even if the primary applicant does not have a job yet, still apply

• Job documents can be submitted later via IRCC webform

• PGWP processing usually takes 3–5 months, giving enough time to secure a job

✅ Maintains spouse’s status

Scenario 2: Missed Applying Together – Applying Later (Costly Mistake)

Many people apply only for PGWP first, thinking they’ll apply for spouse later after getting a job.

This creates problems.

Example:

• PGWP applied in April 2025

• Study permit & SOWP expire in August 2025

• PGWP result not received by August

Now you cannot apply for SOWP alone.

👉 You must:

• Submit another PGWP application

• Pay $255 again

• Run two PGWP applications simultaneously

Later:

• Upload PGWP approval from first application

• Ask IRCC to process only the spouse extension

✅ Still possible, but not ideal

Scenario 3: Apply SOWP After PGWP Approval

Technically possible, but rarely practical, because:

• PGWP processing takes 4–6 months

• In most cases, spouse permit expires before approval
