- TOEFL Paper-Based Test (PBT)
- The TOEFL PBT is offered in areas where the iBT is not available. It covers reading, listening, and writing, but it does not include a speaking section. However, the TOEFL PBT is being phased out and is only available in limited locations.
TOEFL iBT Test Structure
The TOEFL iBT tests your ability to use and understand English at the university level. It assesses how well you can combine your listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills to perform academic tasks. The total test duration is about 3 hours, and it is divided into four sections:
1. Reading (54 – 72 minutes)
- The Reading section consists of 3 to 4 passages, each around 700 words long, followed by 10 questions per passage. The passages are academic in nature, and the questions test your ability to:
- Identify main ideas and details.
- Understand inferences.
- Recognize vocabulary in context.
- Understand sentence structure and purpose.
2. Listening (41 – 57 minutes)
- In the Listening section, you will listen to lectures, discussions, and conversations in an academic setting and answer questions about the content. The section includes:
- 3 to 4 lectures (each 3–5 minutes long), with 6 questions per lecture.
- 2 to 3 conversations (each 3 minutes long), with 5 questions per conversation.
3. Speaking (17 minutes)
- The Speaking section involves 4 tasks:
- Task 1 (Independent Speaking Task): You will speak about a familiar topic based on your own experience and opinion.
- Task 2 and 3 (Integrated Speaking Tasks): You will read a passage, listen to a conversation or lecture, and then respond to a related question.
- Task 4 (Integrated Speaking Task): You will listen to a short academic lecture and respond to a related question.
4. Writing (50 minutes)
- The Writing section consists of two tasks:
- Task 1 (Integrated Writing Task – 20 minutes): You will read a passage, listen to a lecture, and write a response explaining how the lecture relates to the reading passage.
- Task 2 (Independent Writing Task – 30 minutes): You will write an essay based on a given topic, expressing your opinion or argument in a clear and organized manner.
